American Eskimo Dog Training Tips

All types of dogs, including your American Eskimo, can benefit from dog training. Jumping, aggression, and all types of obedience can be learned by your American Eskimo. Training courses and products are available at retail stores, while online dog training information can be accessed immediately.

Your American Eskimo is instinctively aggressive. In the wild, dogs need to be aggressive in order to successfully hunt for food, to continually defend against other creatures, and to protect their food, bed, and mate. Even though this aggressive trait has been minimized over time by selective breeding, we all realize that dogs are instinctively aggressive.

The good news is you can learn to recognize, prevent, and handle dog aggression.

Dogs most commonly exhibit aggression toward one of 2 groups:

1…strangers

2…family members

Each type of aggression requires different intervention because each stems from a different cause.

If your American Eskimo is aggressive toward STRANGERS, it might be because he has not had a real opportunity to interact with strangers. Your dog relies on you to help him learn about the world. You need to take your American Eskimo on plenty of trips outside of your home to help him become comfortable in different surroundings with different animals and people.

This process (called “socialization”) helps to prevent aggression toward strangers by allowing your dog to learn through experience that he does not need to be afraid of new sights, sounds, and smells. You’ll want to start this process slowly so your American Eskimo does not become overwhelmed. Over time, both of you will look forward this socialization process, while eliminating or reducing your dog’s aggression toward strangers.

The most common cause of aggression toward FAMILY MEMBERS is known as “resource guarding.” Your American Eskimo tries to defend his possessions from someone he perceives as a threat. This overly possessive behavior results from the issue of dominance.

Dogs are inherently pack animals. A pack is a very structured environment. Every dog in a pack is aware of the hierarchy or rank of every other dog in the pack. Your American Eskimo views the family environment the same as a dog pack environment.

You can change your dog’s dominant, aggressive behavior through frequent and consistent obedience training to establish your authority over your American Eskimo. Try conducting two 15-minute sessions each day to help your dog understand that you are in charge. Simply reward him with treats and praise for following your command (“sit”) and briefly punish him for misbehavior.

Do you want more information about socializing and handling the aggressive and dominant behaviors of your American Eskimo? Do you want lots of detailed information on a variety of other common American Eskimo behavior problems?

Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Fox Hunting – Animal Rights?? Animal Wrongs!!!

Animal Rights activists get under my collar. These so called “vegetarians” refuse to eat meat on the grounds that animals suffer.Animals suffer???
Ill tell you who suffers.People like me suffer having to listen to this minority of nutcases trotting out their ill conceived advice to the vast majority of sensible meat-eating folk.First of all lets get some facts straight.

FACT 1: Animals cannot suffer pain.It simply isnt possible. You'd have more chance of hurting a cauliflower.animals like sheep, dogs and monkeys, do not have brains. They live like flowers, sucking up water from the ground and eating sunshine.Kick them, poke them, bite them.Rest assured they feel no pain. They may jump or make a noise, but so do trees. That proves nothing.

FACT 2: Man cannot survive by eating vegetables. If you try to survive on vegetables alone, you will die. simple as that. You might just as well try living on a diet of popcorn.

Fact 3: Eggs do NOT come from hens.

These are facts. Now will the long haired idiots who persist in screaming “Murder” everytime someone kills a pig please shut up while I have a bacon sandwich.Thank you

The Maine Coon cat has been called “the king of the domestic cat world”. The breed is visually stunning with its beautiful long ruff, bushy “raccoon like” tail and large tufty paws. The Maine Coon is the largest domesticated cat and visitors to our house are shocked to discover our 2-year old male kitten has another 2-3 years to grow before he is classed as an adult. As well as the Maine Coon’s striking physical appearance, the breed has an inquisitive, friendly and lively personality.

I’ve had many people ask the question, “ I think my cat is at least part Maine Coon…how can I tell?”

This is how the Maine Coon Breeders and Fanciers Association (MCBFA) answer the question on their website:

“The Maine Coon is America’s native longhair cat; it evolved naturally in response to the New England climate. Your cat’s ancestors might be similar to the cats that founded the Maine Coon breed. However, it’s impossible to tell from just looking at your cat if it is related to the Maine Coon or any other breed. Because the Maine Coon is a natural breed and hasn’t been bred to the extremes, there are cats all over the world that resemble the Maine Coon. The only way to tell for sure if your cat is a Maine Coon is to look at the pedigree.”

Ok, that may not help much because most people do know when they have a pedigree Maine Coon because they have papers verifying the pedigree.

So, if you don’t have papers how can you tell if you have at least a part Maine Coon?

Firstly, these cats are not normal! They have distinctive personality traits and unique Maine Coon features. If your cat has some or all of the following, you can be sure you have a cat with dominant Maine Coon breeding:

Physical Features:

1. Head: Round in shape when viewed from the front, medium in width and longish in length. The muzzle is square and can look broad in more mature male cats.

2. Ears: Set high and well apart. They are large, and well tufted tapering to a point, in common with the Bobcat and the Lynx. The tufts on the ears are one of the classic signs of a Maine Coon.

3. Eyes: Large and wide set. Slightly oblique slanting to outer base of ear.

4. Body: Full maturation can take 4 to 5 years and allowances should be made when judging size of the cat. Overall, the body is muscular and broad chested. The body is well proportioned throughout, and there are no unusual “oddities” in relation to size proportion.

5. Legs and Feet: The legs are sturdy and substantial, and proportionate to the body. The paws are very large and well tufted. Tufts in between the toes are an essential feature for a Maine Coon. There are five toes on the front paws and four on the back.

6. Tail: This is the probably the most unmistakable feature of the Maine Coon. The tail is long and should run the length of the body when at least as long as the neck. Originally, when Maine Coons lived as farm cats, the tail would cover the whole body and act as a kind of furry sleeping bag in the winter. The fur is also thick and long. It has been said that the name “coon” comes from “racoon” because of the similarities of the tails of the two animals.

Coat: Heavy and shaggy, medium to longhaired and uneven in length. The fur is shorter on the shoulders and longer on the stomach. A frontal ruff is desirable although there is a marked variation in the length of ruff, depending on the particular line.

Unique Personality Traits

Here are 3 classic Maine Coon characteristics:

· Dog like behavior: Common behavior is they will follow you around, they will sit at your feet, will come to greet you (whenever you’ve been out), they will fetch and retrieve if trained, they will also carry favorite objects such as a toy stick in the mouth and drop it at your feet. Like a dog, it is usual for the Maine Coon to stretch up on its back legs resting its front paws above the waist to demand a stroke from the owners.

· Protective of his home: Can be rather suspicious and extremely curious, a little bit like a police “sniffer” dog checking bags for illegal substances. Although, this is an obvious exaggeration, we have found that non-cat loving visitors are not completely at ease with persistent investigations into their personal belongings.

· “Supervisor” role: This is what we call the constant shadowing behavior of the Maine Coon, when something is happening in the house, such as computer work, housework, assembling furniture, or just about anything where people are moving about. The only way to discourage him/her from joining in is to finish the task when he goes off for a sleep!

In summary, if your cat looks like a Maine Coon and acts like a Maine Coon, you definitely have a part or even full Maine Coon.

Nine Lives Of Cat

I have never climbed to Empire State building and I wasn’t going to do that. I have climbed the Eiffel tower in the elevator with great difficulty: with closed eyes and taking my wife’s hand. Upstairs I tried to be as for from the edge of balcony as I could. In the apartments of Manhattan hotel I left my legs failed after the first glance out of the window. Such senses are close to everybody who suffers from altitude fear. Of course, my acrophobia is too strong but most of people fear the fallings because it is dangerous. Death after falling takes one of the leading places in the USA. In the country near 13 thousand similar accidents happen. And it is the most spread reason of death among children before 15 years old. Every fifth child’s death in New York is a result of such accidents. You may break the bone just because of slipping on the stairs but there are almost no chances after “jumping” from 20 meters. Practically nobody who had fallen from the 6th floor on the ground did not survive.

There is nothing unusual that suicides prefer to jump from the high places. It, perhaps, is the most sure way. If you take the narcosis you may feel sick; if you push the trigger your hand may shake; but if you have already jumped from the roof nothing would help.

On this matter cats and people show the great difference between each other. Cats are absolutely indifferent to altitude. They often survive after the jumping which would kill any man. It is not because they seldom fall. On the contrary in Manhattan where so many high buildings cats fall down more often because they play and follow each other on roofs. Even in my native Los Angeles where so few sky-scrapers cats are often in danger to fall down from the window-sill during the earthquakes. People take fallen cats so often take to veterinary that in their terminology a new term arose: “altitude syndrome of cats”.

In spite of such predisposition of cats to fallings there are fewer fatal results among them then among people. And the case is not only in that cats, unlike people, more adapted to fallings from 6-storey buildings. The more unusual fact is that cats survive in most cases of falling from the sky-scrapers. The champion here (at least in New York) is the kitten Sabrina which had fallen from the 32-th floor and almost didn’t get any damage: it has just lost the tooth and scratched the chest. It’s a paradox but the higher the buildi
1000
ng is the probably of death is less. The ability of surviving after such terrible fallings is the main fact that causes the legend about nine lives of cat.

Cat pasematology (from Greek “pasema” – “falling”), the science about fallings of cats, at first is not so interesting for you as such winning Nobel prize. But from the other side this science is valuable and each felofil (cat fan) understands this. Also it is interesting for medicine: to know the secret of cats would help us to reduce the number of accidents. More over, pasematology helps us to get knowledge in branches where the experiment would be inappropriate.

Let’s begin from the facts, following the scientific tradition. Cat’s syndrome of height was first described in 1976 by doctor Hordon Robinson, veterinary from New York hospital ASPCA. About 160 owners have brought fallen cats to him every year. The next important step was made by two veterinaries, doctors Wein Whitney and Sheryl Melhaff from Manhattan Animal Medicine Center 11 years after. During the only five-months summer-autumn period the number of cats, which had fallen from the window from the second floor and taken to the hospital, was 132. The most of them fell from the 4-6 floor. The maximum altitude was 32-nd floor (the famous Sabrina). Most of the victims fell to the pavement.

The damages that the cats had got were too different from which people got. In the most cases people die because of skull fractures or inner bleedings. After that comes broken spines or chests. But the most spread damage among cats is the nose bleeding. Standing on the top of the Eiffel tower with trembling legs and imagining myself laying on the pavement I thought the least of all about broken nose. Besides cats had got such damages as wounds of snouts, broken teeth, palates and low jaws, chest wounds.

Only three cats were with broken spines and four with broken ribs (that is often met among people). Like people cats often break their extremities but the picture of such fractures is not the same. Adult people more often break their legs, children break their arms, but cats break both the front and the back paws in the same way. (Try to explain this difference now without reading the article to the end).

It is strange but the chances among cats to survive grow together with the altitude: only 5 percent of them die after the falling from 6-31 floor and 10 percents die after falling from 1-5 floor. And we wouldn’t ask the man who wants to throw you out of the window from the second floor to change it on the twentieth one to reduce the danger!

These are the facts. To understand such strange results let us ask the most serious physical analysis what can offer your modest biologist. Physics teaches that the result of falling is connected with it’s speed, softness of surface, clash area and qualities of falling being: its weight, size, solidity, bone structure, joints and muscles.

9.8 m/sec is the acceleration of free falling. If body falls in vacuum its speed grows according to the rule of square root from the distance which had been done. After 32 floors you would get the speed of bullet (about 300 km per hour) and after two floor it would be only 50 km per hour. Just this fact explains my confidence that if I fall from the Eiffel tower the stain on the pavement would be more than the stain after falling from the upper stair. But the distance which the body had gone is not the only characteristic. The power of stroke is also connected with softness of surface because this characteristic shows the “breaking way”, depth, on which you get into surface before you are stopping. The bigger this distance is the less power of strike would be. That is because pole jumpers put under the crossbar thick mat but not the concrete slab. For moderate fee (for example, $10000000) I would agree to jump from the roof on the soft and wide pillow. The stories about pilots, who had jumped without the parachutes but survived, are more about those fortunate men
1000
who fell into the swamp (“breaking way” is about 20 cm), then about those misfortunate of them who fell on the pavement (“breaking way” is a fraction of centimeter). To make the alternative to the soft surface you may wrap yourself with soft material. The fact that children survive more often than adults is partly connected with the action of under skin fat.

Theory says that attitude of the weight of falling body to its size is important because of two reasons. At first, the power of stroke is proportional to the weight. When my son Joshua, whose weight is 11 kg, jumps on my belly then it is a funny game. Hardly this game would give me pleasure when he is an adult and becomes 110 kg National football league forward. If to be more exact all these is expressed by the attitude of weight to area on which the stroke spreads.

The second point here is the resistance of the air. As we know Galileo thought that two bodies of different weights having being thrown from the Piz tower would get to the ground at the same time. It is absolutely correct concerning vacuum where the resistance of the air doesn’t disturb the acceleration. As for the bodies which are falling in the earth atmosphere the more their size and less weight, the less their maximum speed and the quicker it grows. Just this fact is the main principle of the parachute and that is why feather falls on the ground more fluently than cannot kernel.

Now let us try to explain these physical principles like the reasons of the differences of damages after fallings among adults, children and cats. The attitude between weight and area grows together with the size of body. So we strike on the ground stronger than cats even if our bodies are alike and the pose is the same that doesn’t happen in reality.

You may confirm that the bigger the body is the firm its bones will be. And that’s why it will stand after the stronger strokes. But the difference is not so big that the situation could be changed. The danger to break the leg after the easiest falling among elephants is higher than among people: among adults it is the higher than among children and among children it’s higher than among cats. Also cats have got one more unique advantage. They have the wonderful “gyroscope” which is situated in the inner ear. If the cat falls down with its back it quickly turns in the air with its paws down having been not flown even one and a half meter. As a result the stroke is divided in four paws. We, I mean adults, who have worse “gyroscope” can’t control our pose during the falling. More often we land on two legs and less often on the head. Children have big head as compared with the other organs and they often fall with their head down instinctively taking their hands along. These facts cause typical damages: cats break their front and back paws but people more often break the skulls and arms (children) or legs (adults). Another one advantage of cats besides their light weight is that it can bend the extremities with the aim to divide the power of stroke among joints and muscles. If we are deprived of sensible “gyroscope” we should better imitate the cats to bend our legs reducing the power of stroke during the falling.

But even this advantage doesn’t explain the most surprised fact that the chances of cat to survive grow if the altitude is more than the 6-th floor. We remind that bodies falling in the earth atmosphere accelerate to some maximum speed which is connected with air resistance (proportional to bodies area) and weight. After that their speed remains without changing before they change the weight and area. Of course, the weight can’t change but the area which moves up to air stream can be changed. Parachutists during the free fly reduce the area and increase the speed, but stretching like the string, taking along the hands and legs they increase the area and reduce the speed.

Perhaps cats can do the same as parachutists can. Having not get the maximum speed they instinctively stretch their extremities
e28
which may be broken as a result. After getting maximum speed cats begin to feel accelerated power of gravitation and they may weaken taking the paws along like a squirrel-flyer. The resistance of air grows and spread on the whole body and the speed is reduced. Cat’s ability to act like the professional parachutists explains not only its capability to survive after falling from the altitude of more than seven floors but also the big reducing of a risk to break paws. Most cats broke their paws after falling from 6-7th floors and only each thirteenth did the same after falling from the eighth floor or higher.

In general, falling cats have less risk in different ways than people. The little weight guarantees the less power of stroke, the less tension (power divided on the area) and the less maximum speed. All these qualities characterize many other little animals but cats nevertheless have less risk than the little dogs, for example. It is explained by some other advantages. Among them we may remind the beautiful “gyroscope” which helps cats to fall with the paws down but not with the head, bending of extremities which divide the press among the joints and muscles, and at least their ability to take the pose of squirrel-flyer after having been getting the maximum speed.

The knowledge in the area of evolution biology let think that the unique abilities of cats arose as the result of natural selection. The greater part of kinds of cats family and only some of dogs climb up the trees. During the millions years cats have been jumped on their prey from the trees and simply fell from tree. All of them, who had the bad “gyroscope”, hard extremities and those who didn’t study to take the pose of squirrel, died. Only the best “parachutists” survived. So cats must thank just this evolutional history for their nine lives.

German shepherd dog training is enjoyable because German Shepherds are intelligent dogs that may be taught behaviors easily. They respond well to most any type of dog obedience training whether you use clicker training to teach commands, or other reward methods that may be more suitable to the time and effort you want to put in. So whether you want your German shepherd dog training to be about agility, simple commands, or training him to guard your home, here are a few tips that may help you make that happen quickly and easily.

Clicker Training

Clicker training is a method of training a dog that encourages the dog to associate the sound of a clicker with his reward since it is quicker than producing a feeding a reward. It is a great method for German shepherd dog training because the breed is so quick to pick up new behavior. The way it works is that when you teach a new behavior or agility trick, you use a clicker as an audible approval sound that is followed immediately by a reward of some sort (a treat or a favorite toy). The reasoning is that the clicker gives the instant approval to bridge the time between the behavior and the production of the food or toy.

Simple Reward Training

If you do not have a clicker for your German shepherd dog training or simply think the idea is silly, you can use a more traditional approach. Try giving your Shepherd a command and moving his body for him accordingly. Once he has found the positions or behavior, reward him with praise and a treat immediately. Do not delay, because with smart breeds like German Shepherds, they may begin to associate a second behavior with the reward rather than your intended new trick.

German shepherd dog training is not difficult, but a little knowledge of how to train a dog is useful. Your Shepherd should be able to learn a number of commands in a matter of days if you use the methods above consistently and are persistent in your pursuit of a well trained and happy German shepherd.

Natural Dog Products – Herbal Remedies For Common Ailments

Is your canine companion suffering from a particular ailment or disease? Did he injure a part of his body recently? Bringing him to the vet, of course, should be the most essential step towards his recovery. But when it comes to supplementing your pet’s healing process, it is better to go “all organic” and select natural dog products which serve as herbal remedies.

Here are 7 common ailments and injuries, as well as the herbal remedies best suited as cures.

1. Dog has been lethargic for days. This is often caused by parasites in his system. The easiest solution would be to feed your dog some garlic. Most parasites abhor the scent of garlic and they are sure to abandon your dog if such is introduced to his system.

2. Dog has been lethargic for weeks. Such a physical disposition may be caused by ailing kidneys and/or the presence of toxins in the blood stream. Some natural dog products contain herbal remedies for these situations. Such herbal remedies include Burdock, Dandelion and Licorice.

3. Dog is experiencing high fever caused by severe wounds or broken bones. Wounds and fractures heal through time. But to prevent further infection, natural dog product containing herbal remedies like Hawthorn and Yarrow. To relieve the dog of some pain, natural dog products containing the sedative herb called Valerian can likewise be resorted to.

4. Dog loses appetite. Loss of appetite can be attributed to a lot of possible reasons, some of them negligible, some of them grave. Don’t take your chances. His loss of appetite may be caused by stomach problems. Consider natural dog product with herbal remedies like slippery elm (to cure diarrhea if such is the problem), parsley (to help flush out parasites that may have penetrated the organs and the bloodstream), milk thistle (to induce disposal of waste product), and Licorice (to kill the parasites in his system).

5. Dog is pregnant. The walls of the uterine must be strengthened and optimal milk production must be ensured. Natural dog products containing raspberry are acknowledged herbal supplements for bitches approaching the period of labor.

6. Dog develops skin disease. There are only 2 main causes for this: allergy or parasite infestation. Allergies cannot be treated without pi
npointing and isolating the trigger. As for parasite infestation, natural dog products that contain aloe vera and calendula are excellent herbal remedies to keep the dog’s coat and skin healthy.

7. Dog has motion sickness. It can be perilous for some dogs to be transported from place to place if they exhibit signs of vertigo. Natural dog products that contain ginger and valerian would be perfect for such pets.

The first is insulin-dependent diabetes, where the pancreas does not produce enough of the hormone insulin to regulate the blood-sugar levels. The other form of diabetes occurs when the body does not respond properly to the insulin that the pancreas is producing.

A pet shop is usually just a few minutes drive away. In my case, I live in Los Angeles, California where big super pet stores abound nearby. Usually, they would provide the amenities needed for all the basic pet needs – which is very good and perhaps the backbone of their sales. As for me, I own a male half-Persian cat named Crumpet and is very, very dear to me.

You can try this approach, but unfortunately, it works much better for dogs.

Cats frequently get what we call feline asthma. The signs of asthma in cats is very similar to those seen in humans, which is difficulty breathing, wheezing, and coughing that might sound like gagging. If a cat is having trouble breathing, he sits with his neck extended, inhaling and exhaling with his mouth open. Asthma is not the only disease that can cause difficulty breathing in cats, so neither you nor your veterinarian should assume that asthma must be the cause.

Many cats catch what seems to be a cold sometime during their lives, and most of these afflictions are caused by viruses. Cats that have an upper respiratory infection have runny eyes and noses, are lethargic, sneeze, run fevers, and often do not want to eat or drink. These infections are very contagious, and spreading this disease to other cats can be a big concern.

We love our cats. Except when our boys start spraying up the house or when our girls start urinating behind the couch in the living room. If we had tile or ceramic for a floor, cleaning it up would not be such a big issue. But if we had carpet, then we are in a pickle!

Behavior of cats in heat……?

Okay, so I think my cat's in heat, but I'm not sure. She's been meowing a lot more the past few days, all the neighborhood cats have started hanging around our house, and she has been wanting to stay outside a lot more than usual, waking me up (by yowling at me and rubbing against me) at about 4 in the morning and not coming back inside until around midnight…..I'm also worried that if she's in heat, she might also be pregnant, and she's very active and I'm wondering if her jumping fences, climbing trees, and whatever else it is she does will hurt any kittens she might be having……….I'd appreciate any help at all anyone could give me

The most common disorder in cats is runny eyes. Infectious organisms such as the flu viruses or chlamydia cause conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the membranes lining the eyelids. This results in a discharge which is either watery and runny or thick and a greenish yellow color.

Occasionally a runny eye is caused by a disorder of the normal anatomy.

Tear glands continually produce secretions which lubricate the surface of the eyeball and flush particulate material into the tear ducts which then drain into the nose. If there’s a blockage of the ducts, the tears have no choice but to spill over and run down the face. Blockage can occur if there has been previous damage to the ducts or if the cat has an abnormal anatomy.

Persian cats frequently have tear staining, partly because their tear ducts are kinked and partly because their eyeball shape prevents effective drainage. Chronic tear overspill causes a brown staining on the fur which is most noticeable in pale colored cats.

Runny eyes are also a result of tear overproduction if there is an irritation to the sensitive eyeball. The cause may be easily identified as in some longhaired cats where a clump of hair rubs the surface. Some can be much more difficult to detect; solitary aberrant hairs may grow inside the eyelid and can only be discovered by carrying out an extremely thorough examination under general anaesthetic.

The cornea is the clear outer covering of the eyeball and is a very sensitive structure. Flu infections can sometimes extend beyond the membranes and also affect the corneas. In very young kittens, the damage can be so severe that the cornea is extensively scarred and the cat grows up visually impaired or even blind.

Most corneal disease is encountered as a result of a bit of a punch up with another cat and a claw being poked in the eye. The puncture wound may be very obvious, particularly if a bit of claw is left behind in the eyeball.

In other cases there may be no apparent defects.

Mild corneal damage will heal well if the cat is supported with antibiotics but more severe damage may require surgery. Stitching the eyelids together often helps with the healing.

The iris is the structure which gives the eye its color, ranging from pink in albinos, to blue in Siamese, through all shades of yellows, coppers and greens. The iris is a muscular structure which contracts and expands in order to vary the amount of light which passes through to the back of the eye.

It has very delicate blood vessels and if a claw has managed to pierce through the cornea to the iris, the bleeding can be very dramatic.

Some of the more unpleasant feline infections, Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) virus, Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and toxoplasmosis can all cause disease in the iris.

The first sign an owner may notice is a change in color of the eye.

Close examination reveals changes in the shape of the iris and the presence of debris in the fluid behind the cornea. It is very difficult to distinguish which one of these infections has caused the abnormality, so further investigation is always necessary.

If there is a diseased iris, also have to consider the possibility of a tumor. T he two most commonly encountered are lymphosarcoma, a solid form of leukemia, and melanoma, a cancer of the pigment producing cells.

If an iris has been affected by a treatable condition, it may be left with permanent color change and a distorted shape because of adhesions or scar tissue produced during the healing response. Not all areas of new pigment are associated with disease. Some cats, particularly orange colored individuals, can develop little dark patches of pigment in the iris as they age, but any change in eye color should always be checked by your vet.

The retina is a fine membranous structure which lines the back of the eyeball.

Light passes through the pupil and the lens and lands on the retina.

There it stimulates nerve endings which cause electrical signals to be sent to the brain where the information is interpreted as vision.

Any abnormality of the color, the reflectivity or the blood vessels indicates disease of the retina. One of the most serious conditions is a generalized degeneration of the retina. The retina appears to be very bright.

Blood vessels become much finer and in advanced cases are barely visible.

The retina can detach from the underlying tissue if there is a leakage or overproduction of fluid between the layers, or if there is bleeding.

High blood pressure resulting from kidney failure or an overactive thyroid gland can cause this eye problem.

Retinal detachments tend to be quite dramatic in onset and owners report that the cat appears to have gone blind overnight. The pupils are massively dilated and instead of a smooth concave surface there are billowing folds of retina. There is virtually no hope of restoration of eyesight in these cases.

The thought of a blind cat is quite horrifying to most owners but a combination of the cat not knowing it’s supposed to worry about its lack of vision and its other senses being so well developed means they actually cope remarkably well. If the environment is kept as constant as possible, most individuals adapt very well to their surroundings.

Many problems in cats are self -limiting and given one or two days most will rectify themselves. Eye conditions should be treated with a little more respect and a little more urgency even if the cat appears to be totally indifferent to its problem. A mild disorder can result in quite dramatic and devastating changes to the eye if left untreated so don’t delay and seek expert advice as soon as possible.

How to stop cat from scratching carpet?

Our cat is constantly scratching at our carpet in our doorways. He's starting to ruin it and we just had it put in last year. He's been doing it for maybe a month now. We've tried squirting him with water and someone even suggested putting mouthwash on the carpet. Nothing has seemed to work. Any suggestions??????

Spaying your female pet has many benefits, both for you, as a pet owner, and for your pet. Besides preventing unwanted litters of puppies or kittens, spaying can also help make make it possible for your female pet to lead a longer and healthier life.

Let’s start at the beginning. Spaying your pet means removing the female reproductive organs, specifically the uterus and ovaries, so that your pet can no longer become pregnant. The more technical name for a spay is an ovariohysterectomy (or OHE, for short).

Obviously, if breeding your pet is a priority for you, spaying is not an option. However, any female pet which is not a breeding animal can benefit tremendously by being spayed.

What are the benefits of spaying your female pet? Well, of course, one of the most obvious benefits is that you will no longer need to worry about your pet becoming pregnant. You also will not have to worry about your female pet coming into “heat”. This means, for a dog, no bleeding or mess associated with your dog being “in heat”.

For a cat, it means not having to tolerate the unpleasant behaviors that your cat experiences while being “in heat”. For those of you who have never been around a cat “in heat”, these behaviors include loud and frequent vocalization, which can disrupt your entire household, pacing, and urine marking in your home. Unspayed female cats can come into “heat” every few days. This behavior is often a deciding factor for cat owners when considering whether or not to spay their female cat.

There are a number health benefits for your spayed female pet also. If left unspayed, female pets often develop a condition known as pyometra. Pyometra is a severe, life-threatening infection of the female uterus. It is frequently a fatal condition if left untreated. Even with treatment, some female pets do not survive a pyometra infection. Because your female pet’s uterus is removed when she is spayed, the possibility of developing a pyometra is completely removed. Spayed female pets cannot develop this disease.

In addition, because your female pet cannot become pregnant, you don’t have to worry about complications which can occur during or after the birth process of pregnant female pets. There is no need to worry about puppies or kittens being to large to pass through the birth canal, or in the wrong position to be born normally. Conditions such as metritis (an infection of the uterus which occurs after pregnancy) and mastitis (infection of the mammary glands, or breasts) cannot occur in spayed female pets either.

Another benefit to spaying your female pet is a lower chance of developing breast tumors later in life. This primarily applies to pets which are spayed at a young age. If spayed before the first “heat” cycle, the chance of your pet developing breast cancer later in life is very low.

It is a proven fact that pets which are spayed lead longer, healthier lives. Some estimates indicate that spayed females can live as long as twice as long as unspayed females.

Spaying also tends to make your pet calmer and more affectionate, without the mood swings that can accompany the “heat” cycle.

As you can see, there are many strong reasons for spaying your female pet.

Thats Entertainment – A Guide To Keeping Kids Happy On Long Journeys

Are we nearly there yet? How much further? Heading off on holiday with the kids shouldnt be something you dread. They want to get there as much as you, they just need a bit more entertainment along the way.

It is not easy to travel with restless youngsters. So weve come up with a few child-friendly gadgets to guarantee a smooth ride for a stress-free holiday.

The young ones

Books, CDs and cuddly toys will keep babies and toddlers occupied between sleeps, but sometimes you just need to have that extra item up your sleeve.

One such gadget is the Learn and Go Baby Driver (6-24 months). Turn the ignition key, spin the wheel or beep the horn and your little ones will love driving along with you. Whats more, they can learn the alphabet and their colours at the same time.

Another friendly face, wholl make the journey easier for youngsters, is the brightly coloured Charlie Caterpillar. He helps children learn their ABC and once youve reached your destination, can be fastened onto the pram or pushchair with his Velcro straps.

Little angels

A car journey isnt complete without a traditional game of I spy. But there are only so many red cars, newborn lambs, lamp posts or tractors you can spot. So where do you turn when the novelty wears off? In this technological day and age, youre spoilt for choice.

The LeapFrog Leapster 2 is the first pre-school, handheld games console, which gives four to eight-year-olds a fun, safe and secure on-line learning experience.

Alternatively, turn game time into brain time with the V.Smile Cyber Pocket. The portable educational gaming system is perfect for five to nine year olds.

Teenage kicks

For moody teens, who dont have their drivers licence but secretly enjoy family holidays away, the PocketSurfer 2R will ensure they stay in communication.

Wave goodbye to wi-fi hotspots, this portable internet device runs on GPRS and can be used wherever theres a mobile phone signal. Its pricey, but comes with 20 hours a month free usage.

It means they can surf the net or keep in touch with friends via bebo, Facebook or msn. It may also come in handy if youre slightly lost and need a map!
<br /
1000
/>
Family fun

Any gadget that can amuse all members of your family has got to be good. And Myvu video glasses, aimed at ages 10 and over, give children and their parents a hands free, large screen viewing experience, like having your very own Imax cinema!

Game on

Once the cars kitted out as a child-friendly zone, make sure your car insurance covers any expensive gadgets (if they arent covered by your car policy, you may be able to upgrade your home insurance to cover them). And when you stop for the inevitable refreshments, try not to leave them visible. Keep thieves at bay by removing temptation.

When travelling anywhere on long journeys, its also important your cars in good condition. If in doubt, make sure you have breakdown insurance. It could save a lot of time, money and temper tantrums! To save even more money on motor travel, look for the most competitive car insurance price.

No Dog training means more to most new puppy owners than that first important lesson: Not in the House!

Teaching your Dog to go to the toilet outside the home, not in it, usually starts between six and eight weeks of age. Dogs as young as four weeks old, have been started on the house training, but at such a young age, a puppy is unlikely to have enough muscle control.

Like any dog training, the trainer’s patience is as important as the dog’s temperament. ‘Sit’, ‘stay’ and other behaviours can often be learned in a few days. ‘Potty’ training can take weeks – sometimes as short as two, often a month or more.

As with other learned behaviours, you should look for signs of the impending action, then enforce and direct them with a voice command followed by praise. In this case the technique works to the trainer’s advantage, since all dogs will naturally go to the toilet. The trick is to get them to do it when and where you want!

Look for signs such as circling or squatting, then pick up the pup, say ‘outside’ and hurry outside. The puppy may circle some more, but will often squat immediately. As it begins, say “quickly” (or some other phrase) in a clear, firm (but not angry) voice. Wait until the puppy finished and give lots of praise.

You won’t always be able to catch the puppy about to begin, but don’t become angry or impatient when the dog goes to the toilet indoors. It takes time for the dog to learn to tell you it’s time to ‘go outside’. It also takes time for the muscles needed to control bladder and bowels to develop.

Young dogs need to go to the toilet every 2-3 hours, on average. If you haven’t spotted evacuation behaviour within that time, take the dog outside anyway. Issue the command ‘quickly” and wait. At first, usually, the dog will have no clue what you want.

Again, even when outside, it helps to wait and watch for the desired behaviour then issue the command. That helps the dog associate the command with the behaviour. If the dog hasn’t gone after a few minutes and a few ‘quickly’ commands, take it back inside for an hour. Of course, if you spot the pre-toilet behaviour in less time, go outside again immediately.

Dogs have a surprising ability to quickly learn what their ‘alpha’ (the leader of the pack) wants. This is almost always accomplished by associating a verbal command with behaviour, followed by praise. Punishment is usually counter-productive, and nowhere more so than in toilet training. Never rub a dog’s nose in waste.

Paper and/or crate training is preferred by some. A pup can be trained to go on a newspaper, or on one of the chemically treated puppy pads designed for the purpose. Some small breeds that live all day in the home may not need to go outside at all.

The technique has a couple of down sides however. Unlike cats, dogs will rarely go in a perfumed litter box. Newspapers (even with the top layer removed after the dog goes) will eventually create an unpleasant smell in the house.

Also, long before the odour becomes unattractive to humans, dogs can smell their own distinctive aroma. They don’t find it unattractive – quite the opposite. And that’s the problem.

Dogs that are paper trained will often prefer to eliminate indoors. Sometimes they’ll miss the paper by only an inch, creating a mess to clean up.

Once the odour is in the carpet, the dog will often seek that spot out as its proper ‘place to go’. This makes training the dog to go to the toilet outside even more difficult. Best to suffer a few accidents than to create a hard-to-overcome habit.

Patience, praise and consistency are the keys to any dog training. Elimination training is the first test for you and your dog.

Is your cat’s bad behavior driving you up the wall? Many people are under the impression that cats are too independent to be trained. This is not true. Any animal can be trained. You just need to condition its reactions in a consistent and predictable manner. Animal behaviorists call this Pavlovian Conditioning. Although the most famous of the experiments revolved around dogs, subsequent scientists have successfully shown this effect even in human children. In other words, this effect is the basis of all successful animal training methods, from dogs to rats to lions.

Now, conditioning and punishment do not mean the same thing. You do not need to hurt your cat when it misbehaves, you just need to clearly demonstrate that its behavior is unacceptable. So, how do you do that? All you need are a number of spray water bottles filled with cold water, placed in convenient locations around your house. Anytime you see your cat doing something wrong, you immediately spray its body with cold water. This method gets your cats attention and annoys it but does not hurt it. You are not punishing your cat. You are interrupting it in the middle of its misbehavior. Do this consistently and immediately and you will eventually break your cat of its bad habits. An obvious limitation of this method is that if you are not around when kitty misbehaves, it will not work.

Here is a method of deterrence which works even when you are not at home. If your cat eats or scratches your houseplants, you can try putting mothballs in them. Cats are sensitive to the strong smell, and this will keep your cat away from your plants. You can also use the same trick to keep your cat from urinating and defecating in inappropriate locations.

Another problem which you may face as a cat owner is having your cat scratch your furniture or carpet. First, you need to know that your cat is only doing what comes naturally and you should not stop it from scratching. The scratching is meant to maintain its claws in good condition and also to stretch and tone its muscles. If you punish it for scratching, you will confuse it and this will lead to further bad behavior. What you want to do is minimize the damage it can do. Just trim its claws. If you do not know how, get a veterinarian to trim them for you. Ask your vet to teach you. You also want to redirect your cat’s attention from your carpet or furniture to another target. If your cat likes to scratch vertical surfaces, then get it a vertical scratching post. Ditto for horizontal surfaces.

Try these tips for stopping your cat’s bad behavior. You do not have to be cruel and punish kitty. Just take some suitable preventative measures to interrupt or prevent its bad behavior. Be consistent, be firm and patient in keeping the bad behavior from turning into bad habits.

Cat Not Urinating? How To Take A Natural Approach

Ask any long time cat owner if they’ve ever dealt with cat urinating issues, and you’ll get a knowing glance and a nod of the head. Next, you might hear them recount all of the various things they’ve done to try to eradicate the problem. Whether a kitty’s urinary issues are strictly behavioral, or whether these behaviors results from a cat UTI or blockage, you should know that natural remedies can provide some much needed relief.

If you’ve read to this point in the article, in all likelihood you are having trouble with cat urinating issues. If you faithfully clean his litter box every day only to notice that he misses the cat box, or doesn’t even attempt to use it, then you should keep looking for clues that may point to a medical issue.

A cat who is in pain often tries to urinate in the bath tub, on kitchen or bathroom tile, or even on your pillow! If you are dealing with a cat not urinating, chances are his has urinary tract health issues. If you notice blood in his urine, if he is lethargic, or if he stops eating or drinking altogether, it’s important to take him to the vet right away.

When a cat stops eliminating urine, his kidneys will soon fail and his blood will be infused with toxic waste. If he is suffering a blockage or a severe infection that restricts the flow of urine, he may have only 3 days or so to get help before he dies from the condition. Only your vet can properly diagnose this condition and determine whether the problem results from a simple infection or a blockage.

Once your vet has dealt with a blockage, your cat will need extra care while he is recovering. Talk to your vet about improving your kitty’s urinary tract health naturally. Increasingly, vets are avoiding the use of antibiotics and steroids whenever possible and turning to herbal remedies to help cats deal effectively with lower urinary tract conditions.

Refer to the following list of effective herbal remedies for the top 3 conditions that contribute to feline lower urinary tract conditions:

1. Stress: Research indicates that high stress levels in cats are directly correlated with poor feline urinary health. Scutellaria laterifolia (Scullcap) is a widely used herb that can help calm your kitty’s nerves.

2. Out-of-balance pH levels: Stress, lack of adequate hydration, medica
1000
tions, and low protein content in kitty’s food can all throw your cat’s body chemistry out of whack. When you deal with cat urinating issues, your vet will check the pH level in you cat’s bladder. Arctostaphylos uva ursi has been shown to restore your cat’s urinary system to a normal pH level.

3. Accumulation of toxins in the body: A cat not urinating will quickly develop high levels of toxins in the bloodstream. Even after a blockage is removed, his kidneys will need help to clean out these residual toxins. Arctium lappa (Burdock) is effective in cleansing and purifying the blood, and is hailed for its ability to help the kidneys wash toxins from the body.

Now that you know how to approach cat urinating issues naturally, you can use these safe herbal remedies for your cat’s urinary tract health. You should also make sure to keep the litter box clean and have plenty of fresh water available for your cat. You can even mix a pinch of natural homeopathic herbs into kitty’s food a couple of times a day so that you won’t have to deal with your cat not urinating again. These herbs can make the healing process much easier for a cat who is recovering from a blockage or UTI.

My cat doesn't like cat nip, either. And I don't like to give it to him, anyways.
SECRETS on Choosing Cat Urine Cleaning Products
by: Hayden Brown

This is a true cat urine cleaning products Guide for those who ask any of the following questions:

How to choose a cat urine remover?

How to select a cat urine remover?

How to find a cat urine remover?

With all this choice in an endless supply of cat urine cleaning products there is one problem and that is “CHOICE”. How do you choose the right one? how do you select the best product for you and your pet? Well I am going to share with you this secret whether your question is how to choose a cat urine remover, how to find a cat urine remover or how to select a cat urine remover.

The truth is you can spend days even weeks looking at different cat urine cleaning products and compare features or value. But somewhere you have to draw the line, some time you will have to make a choice. That is the reason for this article, to save pet owners from wasting their time and money on something that they really are not sure on. I have already spent my time looking at different cat urine cleaning products that remove serious cat urine and I’m giving you this information as an easy to understand rating system.

To understand the system completely you will first need to have the 9 MOST IMPORTANT CRITERIA you ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY must know before purchasing any cat urine cleaning products. These following 9 criteria will allow you to make a quick sound judgment on any product, so you know instantly if it is a yes or a no! Without it you could be very disappointed with the product bought because of its lack of performance and with no way of refunding it, you would be wasting money.

So for the pet owners who want to find the best cat urine cleaning product to remove those serious cat urine stains just use these follow 9 criteras.

1. No fragrance to hide or disguise the odor since this will only fix the problem temporarily.

Masking the odor may work for the time being, but wait 2-3 hours and that smell will be back. It is important to be able to smell the urine stain with out fragrances to tell if it was effectively removed. If the smell persists then total removal was definitely ineffective even if no stain can be seen.

2. EASY to use SAVING you time, effort and MONEY!

Make sure the product is an easy one step process for its use! The last thing you need is to spend more time then necessary applying two or three treatments for total removal. I don’t think the company really cares how long it takes you to clean up since they are not the ones cleaning up the mess. I want it to be as easy as possible! And so should YOU!

3. No claim to absorb or sponge the stain, since this will later require effort to clean any remaining remnants.

Any product that claims to absorb or sponge the stain usually (but not always) requires an applying step, then wait after X hours to do the second step, which is to vacuum or clean it up. To me this seems like double work and it would have to be cleaned thoroughly to remove all remnants of the cleaning agent.

4. Unmatched quality GUARANTEED by the manufacturer that will remove all components of the stain from color, texture, odor and the toughest component of ALL!………Uric salt crystals!

A clearly stated GUARANTEE is important to you as the purchaser. This is your insurance and leverage as a customer. And it would not be smart to shop online without any form of insurance. Businesses today usually accept this form of risk to them and I would be suspicious of any business that did not CLEARLY state a GUARANTEE.

The toughest component of urine is the “Uric Salt Crystals”. When looking for pet stain cleaner you should be looking to see what has it been tested on and what does it remove? Does it remove Uric Salt Crystals?

5. Must prevent your pet from repeated soiling in the same area.

The reason I was emphasizing about the Uric Salt Crystals is because it is these crystals that hold the marking scents of your pet. Remember how dog marks his territory by urinating around their area. Well it is these crystals that hold their scent in which they can find that same spot over and over again. If you can remover these Uric Salt Crystals then you can prevent this habit.

6. Must be NON-TOXIC for YOU, children, pets and guests.

I have a one and a half year old son at the time of writing this article and for anyone who is a parent, toxic chemicals are a concern. We place all ours outside in the shed and up high so they are out of the reach of little hands. But if you are not a parent then you too should give a thought about the toxics used in your house. This is for you, your pets and for the people you invite to come around to your house.

7. Must have a long history (i.e. 30 YEARS) of customer satisfaction.

If the business or product has been around for a long period time then you can feel assured that the product may be good. The logic behind this statement is that with all the securities commissions around the world and the strong internet anti-fraud measures, a business will have to be legitimate to stay around for any long period of time. If they were not legitimate then they would only be around for a short time before getting shut down. Scams come and go but a good business or product is around for the long term, that you can TRUST!

8. Size.

How much are you getting in one bottle? You want the bottle to last a while before you have to order a new one.

9. Unbeatable value, including FREE bonuses, with out any drop in quality.

What I am about to say may be common knowledge to some people, but the problem with ‘common knowledge’ is that it is not common. Once you have found your pet stain cleaner that seems to be a high quality product. You MUST ask “WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME!” If you purchase this product, what else are you going to get? By doing this you will always get more value for your dollar.

There is a skill to this as well, since you need to look for the not so obvious. Most people look for the little free gimmicks like a free carpet cleaner included or a free black light to find stains (you will need the right UV frequency for it to work). But what I am talking about are extras that work for you. Are you receiving bonuses that you can sell? Might you get the opportunity to join the businesses affiliate program after the purchase and make money off the product you tested (used). Is that business going to work for you long term?, long after the purchase of their product.
